About me

I graduated from Kent State University in December 2009 with a bachelor’s degree in political science and a writing minor. My work has appeared in several Northeast Ohio newspapers. I currently serve as commentary adviser at Be Respectful, Be Respected (BRsq), a young peoples’ media projec.

My journalistic work was first published in the Alliance Review in 2003. After I graduated high school in 2004, I worked for the Canton Repository. And at Kent State University the following year, I started as a columnist at the Daily Kent Stater.

Looking past moralistic or cultural explanations for social problems has been an important consequence of my political science training. While morals and culture explain certain facets of problems, simplistic arguments, such as “They hate our freedom,” do not account, for instance, for economic or historical factors.

In addition to my experience and knowledge, I have strong writing skills. In my position at BRsq, I work with young writers (18-24) throughout the writing process. I have experience in idea development, story coaching and drafting stories.

OBJECTIVE:

I want to guide writers from idea development to drafting and polishing a finished product.

QUALIFICATIONS

Having worked in the media as a writer and editor since I graduated high school, I developed a strong grasp of English grammar and composition. I stress evocative writing, varied sentence structure, and strong arguments as an editor. Throughout the writing process, I strive to maintain good morale by praising the writers I work with, as I suggest changes.
